Container

After the purchase of a gantry crane and establishment of the container harbour, container traffic via the port of Larvik had a flying start at the end of the 1990’s. In subsequent years, considerable investments were made into these operations, including extension of quays, upgrading land areas and infrastructure, and the acquisition of a mobile harbour crane. Additionally, terminal operator Larvik Container Terminal AS has continually invested in land based handling equipment.

The container traffic has tripled since 2000, something which has resulted in Larvik, with a market share of 9 percent, being Norway´s second largest container harbour for the third year in a row.

The figures for 2010 show a volume of 57.900 TEUs in 2010. A total of 646.000 tons of goods were transported in these containers, with stone blocks accounting for 262.000 tons (41 percent). Corresponding figures for 2009 were 622.000 tons and 228.000 tons.
Flow of container goods measured in tons was 18 percent import and 82 percent export in 2010 (2009: 19 percent and 81 percent). The large amount of granite on the export side gives a significant effect.

The three shipping companies Unifeeder, MSC and Tschudi Lines operate regular container lines via Larvik and other important container ports in Europe.

The new container quay at Revet, which doubled the quay capacity in the Container Terminal, opened in October 2010.

The container terminal at Revet is ISPS certified.
